O’Brien, Michael Patrick
MACEDON: (3/13/1922 -1/18/2019), Husband, Father, Grandfather. Michael passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019 at age 96. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Joan O’Brien; seven children: Maureen O’Brien Oser, Kevin O’Brien, Sheila O’Brien, Siobhan O’Brien, Brendan O’Brien, Deirdre Rosenberg and Declan O’Brien; eleven grandchildren: Kelsi and Jeremy Oser, Elizabeth and Therese O’Brien, Michael and Connor O’Brien, Jared and Andrew Rosenberg, Alec, Aidan and Caitlin O’Brien; sister Peggy Hickey, and wonderful family, friends and neighbors. Michael was born in Bantry, County Cork, Ireland, one of 14 children. In his twenties, he immigrated to the United States to seek better opportunities. He arrived in New York on Thanksgiving Day, and told and retold the story throughout his lifetime in the form of a poem. After a couple of years of living and working in Upstate NY, he was lonely for the “old sod” and decided to go back to Ireland. With some money in his pocket, he bought a one-way ticket back home. It was on this trip that he met Joan Twomey – his future wife and the “love of his life.” Michael or “Mikey” as he was affectionately referred to, was always a real “charmer”. Joan lovingly referred to him as her “Duke”. Michael returned to the United States knowing he would be able to find work and support his future wife. He sent poems and letters to Joan for the next year until she followed her “Duke” to America, where they were married and began their lives together. Over his lifetime Michael worked at the American Can Company; he owned and operated a Landscaping Company, Mike’s Nursery, whose motto was “Greener Lawns by the Leprechauns,” and ultimately, he retired from the Fairport Central School System as an Area Grounds Supervisor. Michael never met a stranger. He always had a story, or an old Irish poem or a joke to tell you. He would sing a song or recite an old Irish Ballad to anyone who would listen. Yes, he really was a charmer. He valued and embraced lifelong friendships from folks he met delivering a tree or putting in a lawn, as well as his wonderful community of neighbors from Macedon to Fairport, including members and clergy from the Catholic Church. Michael loved to play cards with friends and family, particularly when “quiet money” was involved. He will be remembered most of all for being a loving husband to his wife of 65 years, Joan, a proud Dad to his seven children, a caring Grandpa to all of his grandkids and a friend whenever one was needed. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Wednesday (January 30), 11:15 AM at Church of the Assumption, 20 East Avenue, Fairport, NY 14450. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, www.stjude.org. Curtis, Linda
ONTARIO: Went home to the Lord on January 10, 2019 at the age of 75. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by those she loved. Linda was born November 4, 1943 in Rochester, New York. She graduated from Wayne Central High School in Ontario and later graduated from Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia. A desire to help those in need led Linda to a career in nursing that began with her graduation from York School of Nursing in York, Pennsylvania. She traveled to Vietnam in 1972 where she carried out missionary work as a nurse until 1975. While in Vietnam, she assisted in the design and management of a health clinic in the city of Dalat. Linda contracted black water fever while in Vietnam, a deadly complication resulting from malaria. Despite an arduous fight to overcome the illness, she stayed in Vietnam to continue caring for those in need. Later in life, Linda spent 20 years working at Kirkhaven, a senior living center in Rochester. She also offered her tenderness toward others and knowledge of nursing to the Alzheimer’s Association’s Rochester and Finger Lakes Chapter. Linda enjoyed reading, watching crime television and Penn State college football. She had a green thumb displayed by her vibrant summer gardens and the plants that adorned her home. When Linda returned to the states from Vietnam, she started a family of her own – a dream she held closely to her heart for many years. Above all, Linda loved her children and grandchildren. What brought her the most joy was spending time with each of them. With Linda, they were never alone and never without love. Linda’s loved ones will remember her generosity in spirit and an unyielding love for those she cherished. She was a humble woman who faced many struggles, but never relented. Her strength was displayed by her courageous battle with a disease called amyloidosis. Originally given six months to live by doctors, Linda fought for three years so she could stay close to the ones she loved. As her days grew more difficult and her body weakened, her love for the Lord grew stronger. As her beloved friend Carol Steckel said, “She ran her race, finished her course and kept the faith.” Linda donated her remains to the University of Rochester Medical Center to further the battle against the disease she endured. Aside from Carol, Linda is survived by her children, Sarah Curtis, of Ontario, New York; Bethany Hoffman, of Westmont, Pennsylvania; and Aaron Curtis, of Lowell, Massachusetts; her husband of 44 years, John Curtis; grandchildren Mariah, Francesca, Jack, Cosette, Natalie, Christian, Caleb, Yu Lin and Josiah; several sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews, stepdaughters and stepgranddaughters, and beloved friends. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Amyloidosis Foundation, which can be done at http://www.amyloidosis.org or by calling 877-269-5643. Please visit www.murphyfuneralservices.com to leave a condolence, light a candle, or to upload a photo.

VanNorman, Cynthia
LINVILLE, NC: Cynthia VanNorman died peacefully at her home in Linville, NC, on Saturday (January 26th 2019). Cindy was born in Lyons, New York, on January 6th 1957 to Frederick W. and Shirley (McIntyre) VanNorman. She was the youngest of their five children – “the baby”. She graduated from Lyons Jr. Sr. High School in 1975. Thereafter, Cindy moved to Naples, Florida, where she attended Naples Community College and worked for Palmer Cable/Comcast for 29 years. Later, she relocated to North Carolina where she was employed by Cannon Hospital in Linville for 10 years. Her long tenure in those two positions hints at some of the key facets of her personality: dedication, loyalty, steadfastness. These characteristics extended beyond her work to all aspects of her life – to her friends, her family, her pets, and most of all, to her beloved sons, Kevin and Kenith Preslar, to whom she always referred as “my boys” with a certain pride in her voice. Cindy was also honest and forthright, never afraid to speak her mind, particularly in defense of others, and perhaps for this reason, she could gain the trust and respect of, and therefore make friends with, nearly anyone. She adored children, and her playful, sometimes impish humor, and easy way delighted them. The same was true for animals – domestic, stray or wild. She enjoyed travel and exploration and relished trips to places as far flung as Italy as much as she did a day trip to hike Grandfather Mountain. She also took great joy in gardening and making her home. Cindy will be interred in South Lyons Cemetery, where she will join her father and her brothers Frederick and David who predeceased her. She is survived by her sons, mother, sisters, Linda VanNorman and Cathy (James) Kallassy, sister-in-law, Eileen VanNorman, nephews Anthony Palone and Frederick VanNorman, nieces Jennifer (VanNorman) Marker and Amanda (Johnson) Clarke, and several great nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Avery County Humane Society, 279 New Vale Road, Newland, NC 28657.
