PHELPS: Peg Cook went home to be with Jesus surrounded by her family who loved her very much. While she will have no statues erected for her or her name in lights, she was an amazing woman who lived a very full life in the love of family and friends. She was born on February 7, 1931, the second child of nine and oldest girl to Stanleigh and Adelaide (Benson) Cook. She grew up in Orleans, NY and attended grades 1-8 in the two room school house in Orleans. She completed high school in Clifton Springs, graduating at the young age of 16. She married Vincent (Benny) Canne and they made their home in Phelps, NY. They had two children, Elaine and John. She devoted herself to her family, raising her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. She was active in the Orleans Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and helped with the youth group. She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and helped with many other activities her children were involved in. Peg had many interests throughout her life. She loved literature and history and had read every book in the Orleans school library by the age of 10. She always welcomed a book as a gift. She wrote skits, poetry and short stories, completing a children’s book for her grandchildren called “But the Frog Wouldn’t Say That”. It was a collection of adventure stories that she told them when they were little. She acted in skits and plays and musicals. She was in the musicals, “Joseph’s Technicolor Dream Coat” and “Into the Woods” which were directed by her granddaughter, Lorelei. Peg played the piano, took voice lessons and sang solos in church. She was interested in politics and was active in the Republican Party. She loved animals, especially cats, rescuing a few in her lifetime and supported the Wayne County Humane Society. When her children were older, Peg went to work for F.W. Woolworth’s in Geneva and was the manager of the lunch counter for many years. She went on to work for Sarah Coventry in Newark and then for Ontario County. She retired early to take care of her mother until she passed in 2001. Peg then moved to the Rose Garden Apts. in Newark where she started and directed many of the activities at their community center including a Monday Morning Coffee Group, a Wednesday Movie Night, and a monthly party and luncheon. She organized games, wrote, directed and performed skits as well as many other activities for her friends and neighbors at the Rose Garden. She met her second love, Leo Visco, at one of the monthly parties. He was a guitar player and singer in the band she had hired. You would often find them singing old songs together. Peg fought the good fight and told her family just before she died that she had led a full life knowing the great love of family and friends and was ready to go be with Jesus, that there was nothing better than that. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Vincent (Benny) Canne; her second love, Leo Visco; her brothers, Stanleigh Jr. (Gene), John (Jack) and Edward Cook.
Peg is survived by her children, Elaine (Al) Liberio of Palmyra and John (Patricia) Canne of Clifton Springs; her sister MaryAnn (Robert) Marshall; her brothers, Burr (Vivian), James, David (Carolyn), and Gary (Kathy) Cook; sisters in law, Lucille Bauer, Miriam Cook and Vicci Cook; five grandchildren, Keith (Michelle) Roberts, Lorelei Mellon, Peter (Carrie) Canne, Timothy and Jason Canne; seven greatgrandchildren, Madison Roberts; Ryleigh, Makenna and Julia Canne; Sawyer, Matilda and James Mellon and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service celebrating the amazing life of Peg Cook will be held at the Wellspring Church, 22 Teft Ave., Clifton Springs, NY at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 16, 2016 Arrangements by the R.A. Patrick Funeral Home, Clifton Springs
