Herrington, Nancy Sawyer

NEWARK: Nancy Sawyer Herrington, passed away on Wednesday (September 26, 2018) in Mount Morris.  Nancy was born on June 6, 1930 in Webster, the daughter of the late Wesley and Doris (Allen) Sawyer.  She married  Merle H. Herrington on August 7, 1954 and resided in Newark until March of 2016 when she moved to Mount Morris. Newark had been her beloved community for most of her life having graduated from Newark High School in 1948. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Miami University of Ohio in 1952 where she majored in Interior Design and was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. One of Nancy’s greatest enjoyments was travel.  She was a homemaker who loved decorating and spending time with family. Nancy was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, Newark Garden Club, and enjoyed being in a bridge club.  Painting with oils and water colors was also a passion of hers. She is survived by two daughters Tracey W. Herrington (Mark D. Sager) of Dansville and Roxanne L. (James F.) Griep of LeRoy; three grandchildren Madeline (Jacob P.) Krautwurst of Raleigh, NC, Olivia A. Griep of Avon and Joseph H. Griep of LeRoy; several nieces and a nephew.  Nancy was predeceased by her husband Merle in 1989; a brother and sister-in-law E.I. (Red) and Mary T. (Mici)  Sawyer. Friends may call from 12-2 PM on Saturday (October 13th) at the Paul L. NEWARK/CLIFTON SPRINGS: Ella Mae DeCracker, 92, died Monday (October 1, 2018) at the Clifton Springs Hospital. Ella was born on November 14, 1925 in Marion, New York, the daughter of the late Glen and Sarah Nortier DeCracker.  She was a graduate of Lyons High School, Class of 1943.  Ella was a 1948 graduate of Syracuse University with degrees in Business Administration and Accounting.  She remained an ardent Syracuse basketball fan and a member of the Alumni Association. Ella was the Treasurer at Security Trust in Rochester for over 35 years, retiring in 1984. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women Group and the Rebecca Ruth Circle.  Ella was also active with the Newark Garden Club,  the Friends of the Newark Public Library, Newark-Arcadia Historical Society and the Wayne County Historical Society. She is survived by a niece Susan (Larry) Ellison of Kalamazoo, MI; several cousins;  good friends Anna and Nelson Steurrys and many dear friends. Ella was predeceased by her brother Lester DeCracker. FORT WAYNE, INDIANA: Formerly of Newark, Karen Sue Kelley, age 61, Born September 28th, 1956, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, September 23rd, 2018. Born to Thomas and Joann Ulrich, in Newark, New York on September 28th, 1956. Right from the beginning, Karen was a sports enthusiast in the making. She raced mic-rods as a youngster, played soccer, basketball, and softball through the Alex Eligh Community Center and Newark High School, as well as bowl for as long as we can remember at Rose Bowl Lanes. She would continue the love of these sports by participating as an adult and coaching the kids that enjoyed them as much as her. She worked for the State of New York for 27 years before moving to Fort Wayne in 2002.  She continued to work for another 10 years before retiring in 2013. She is survived by her husband, Ray Kelley; her children, Kelly Carlin and Matt (Jackie) Carlin; her grandchildren, Ava Grace, Dakota Marie, Parker Ryan, and Elena.  Her mother, Joann Ulrich; her siblings, Kathy Ulrich, Kevin Ulrich, Kyle (Pam) Ulrich, and Kristy (Mark) Hughson.  She was predeceased by her, grandmother, Florence O’Neil; her father, Thomas Ulrich; and her niece and nephew, Kaleigh and Ryan Hughson.  Karen was laid to rest on her birthday, Friday, September 28th in the Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne, Indiana. SCOTTSDALE, AZ / ROCHESTER, NY:  Died Sunday, September 30, 2018, in Arizona at the age of 74. Frank was born August 24, 1944 in Rochester, NY, son of Frank and Josephine Poole Holdraker. He graduated from East Ridge High School in 1962, Rochester Business School, and Drake College of Florida where he received his B.S. in Business Administration. Frank served in the Air Force, based at NORAD.  He took a job at Pizza Hut, where he became manager and later served as Vice President of the company (1974-1980), then Senior Director, International with Pizza Hut. He served as President and CEO of Ponderosa, Inc., steakhouse chain from 1986 to 1989. He served as Senior Vice President of Coulter Enterprise, a major multi-state Pizza Hut franchisee from 1980 to 1986. He was Chairman at LaSalle Brands Corporation and served as its Director from, then Chief Executive Officer until October 23, 2006. He retired as President of Kokopelli Franchise Company, LLC. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cheryl Shannon Holdraker, sisters Lorraine Holdraker and Judy Crosby, both of Rochester, NY and brother Ron (Patti) Holdraker of Walworth, NY; nieces Jean Crosby, Karen Heisig, Jennifer Sterling, nephews Todd Crosby, Brian (Tammy) Crosby, Jon Sterling,  Wade (Amanda) Holdraker, Devin (Christy) Holdraker, great nieces and great nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by his parents, Frank and Josephine Holdraker, and his son Scott Holdraker. NEWARK/LYONS: Donna M. Sergisson, 74, on Tuesday (October 2, 2018) at the Newark Wayne Community Hospital.  She had been a long time resident of the Wayne County Nursing Home. Donna was born on January 24, 1944 in Lyons, the daughter of the late Irving and Mary DeMeyer Marsteiner.  She was a 1962 graduate of Lyons High School.  Donna  worked in data processing for the Lyons National Bank for about 30 years, retiring in 1999.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Donna enjoyed reading, doing crafts and had loved to travel. She is survived by her husband David of Newark; three brothers James Marsteiner of Nashville, TN, Edward Marsteiner of Newark and Ronald Marsteiner of Sodus; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. MARION: Shirley passed away at her home on Wednesday October 3, 2018. Shirley was born in Sodus, NY and was the daughter of the late Marie and Ernest Bombard. Shirley was a lover of the arts and enjoyed plays, musicals and concerts of all kinds and genres. She worked in the corporate world for many years finally retiring to enjoy traveling to many of her favorite places & spending time with her family and friends. As a Mother, Shirley instilled a strong work ethic and a love of family and of life in to her children. LYONS/NEWARK: Thomas E. Shear, 79,  died Wednesday (October 3, 2018) at Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse Tom was born in Buffalo on June 28, 1939, the son of the late Charles and Josephine Brown Shear.  He graduated from Kenmore High School in 1957 and the University of Buffalo in 1962 with a Bachelor Degree in Finance.  For a few years, he worked for Travelers Insurance Company in Rochester.  In 1968, Tom relocated to Newark, working for the Ely and Leene Insurance Agency. Later,  he had also worked for Elmer Stell & Sons and for Sullivan Insurance Agencies. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church in Lyons and had been a long time communicant of St. Michael Church in Newark. Tom had been active in the community as a member and Past President of the Newark Lions Club, the Newark Country Club and the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross.  He had also been a member of the Newark Jaycee’s and the Newark Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Lyons, his children Cathleen (Gary) Zdyb of Pittsford, James (Shannon) of Newark and Andrea Parker of Palmyra; a daughter-in-law Kim Shear of Newark; stepchildren Christina Compson, Joseph Fleisher, Amy (Joe) DeTorio, Dan (Claire) Fleisher, Katie (Scott) Smith and David Fleisher; eight grandchildren Haley, Maddie, Jacob, and Carly Shear, Brittany Russell, Richie Parker, Elizabeth and Stephanie Zdyb; two great grandchildren Derrick Woolfolk and Hazel Bell; many step grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister Molly (Larry) Lacieer of Ocala, FL. SODUS: Age 82, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 1st, 2018. Alton, affectionately known as “Tex” was born on June 15th, 1936 to Cy & Mabel Hawley. As a child, Alton attended St. James Baptist in Red Rock, TX. He graduated from Weldon High School in Gladewater, TX. He retired after 40 years at Curtice & Burns in Red Creek, NY. He was a faithful member of the Living Word Assembly of God in Ontario, NY. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nellie; son, Ralph (Deborah) of Rochester; sister, Gladys Hawley Jackson; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; god daughter, Celeste. He was predeceased by brothers, Lester, Edward, Vernell, Douglas and Coye; sister, Doretha Gordon. NEWARK: John “Jack” Edward  Hart, 70, passed away on Saturday (October 6, 2018), at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born on March 17, 1948 in Clifton Springs, the son of Edward “Pat” and Eleanor “Timmy” Timmerman Hart.  He graduated from Newark High School in 1966 and served with the US Army in Vietnam.  He was a member of the Arcadia Memorial Post VFW, the August Mauer Post American Legion and the Park Presbyterian Church. Jack had worked as a driver for Newark Florist for many years. In the past year, he enjoyed participating in the Elder One Program in Newark. He enjoyed going for walks, vacationing with his family and spending time with his grandson. Jack will be remembered by his loving wife of 36 years, Patricia, his children Caitlin (Brian) Arbogast of Newark and Nathan (his girl friend, Kristina Interlicchia) of Fairport, grandson Colton Arbogast; father and mother-in-law Nelson and Jane Gulvin of Phelps, sister-in-law Deborah Wallace of Bath, brother and sister-in-laws Kenneth and Margaret Gulvin of Canandaigua, Tim and Cheryl TenEyck of Waterloo and several nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents, a brother Paul and a brother-in-law Joe Wallace. Friends may call from 4–7 PM on Friday (October 12th) at the Paul L. ONTARIO: Katharine (Katie) Merk McNally passed away on September 28, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Cambridge, MA in 1933, she was the daughter of two distinguished scholars of American history. Her father taught at Harvard University, and her mother taught at Northeastern University. Katie studied at the Longy School of Music and Radcliffe College (Cambridge, MA), from which she graduated with honors. She taught music for two years at Westbrook Junior College in Portland, ME. First married to Robert Freeman in 1957, she was the devoted mother of two children, John and Betsy. In 1977, she married Jim McNally, with whom she founded Camelot Yachts in Ontario, NY. Katie was an avid musician, playing both the piano and cello, as well as an accomplished singer. She performed with the Rochester Oratorio Society and at the Finger Lakes Choral Festival. She also sang in the choir at Webster Presbyterian Church. She was a dedicated member of Mu Phi Epsilon’s Rochester, NY chapter, a co-ed international professional musical fraternity, as well as a member of the Town of Ontario’s Historical & Landmark Preservation Society. She supported local projects of Habitat for Humanity. But most of all, she loved taking photographs, which she fervently shared with family and friends. She is survived by her younger brother Frederick Merk of Groton, MA; by her children: John Freeman and his wife Amy of Webster, NY and Elizabeth Poon and her husband Fu of Southborough, MA; and by her four grandchildren: Morgan and Connor Freeman, Benjamin and Nicholas Poon. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2:00 p.m. at Webster Presbyterian Church, 550 Webster Road, Webster, NY. A burial ceremony with family members will be held on Saturday, October 20, 12:00 p.m. in Winchester, MA. NEWARK: Carol Jean Raes, 60 entered eternal rest Saturday, October 6, 2018 at her home. Carol was born the daughter of the late Peter and Jean (Klahn) Raes on Monday, November 18, 1957 in Lyons, NY. She was a graduate of Lyons High School class of 1977. For 17 years, Carol worked at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital in the Lab Department as a Phlebotomist. She had also worked for the Northside Laundromat in Newark for several years. Carol enjoyed working in her vegetable and flowers gardens, going to the Wayne County Fair and most of all collecting the California Raisins. Carol will be remembered by her loving sister and caregiver, Lucille (Robert) Sprong; brothers, Charles (Becky) Raes and Mark (Heather) Raes; many nieces and nephews, four great nephews, aunts, uncles and many friends. ARCADIA: Jack “Captain Jack” Jay Chaltain, 79 entered eternal rest on Monday, October 8, 2018, at his home. Jack was born the son of the late Jacques and Isabelle (Running) Chaltain on Friday, March 10, 1939, in Alexandria Bay, NY. He worked for Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester as an electrician, retiring at the age of 58. Jack enjoyed boating, fishing, and having a beer or two with friends. He was a member of the Newark American Legion, Lyons VFW and the Newark Elks Lodge. Jack will be remembered by his sons, Christopher (Jeannie) Chaltain and Curtis (Ruth Columbus) Chaltain; grandchildren, Jonathan, Sean, Matthew, and Taylor; five siblings; his companion and girlfriend, Karen Cermak; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Dinger and “adopted son”, Todd Tone; best friend, John Lawrence; his little friend who never left his side, Bella, his dog. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Richard Chaltain.
