LYONS: Died peacefully on September 14, 2018. Lee was born on September 19, 1923 in Kingston, New York to Alvin and Ellen Boice. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, four brothers, and five sisters. On August 17, 1946, Lee married Mary Martha Collins. Lee was devoted to his wife of 71 years and together they raised eight children. He is survived by his children John (Sylvia), David (Kathleen), Lewis Jeffrey, Jane Cardullias, Martha (John) Lyons, Rebecca (Dennis) Kaniecki, Alvin (Colleen), Leland (Kendra) and Noriko (Dan)Takaguchi. Nineteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren were blessed to know him. Lee’s life was defined by his love for his family and his commitment to service to others. He was a graduate of Kingston (NY) High School and Ithaca College. Lee moved his family to Lyons in 1949 and taught physical education at Lyons Central School for 36 years. During his tenure he coached football, tennis, basketball, baseball, wrestling and his beloved golf. He also was Director of Physical Education and Athletics for 19 years, Secretary-Treasurer of Wayne Finger Lakes Football League, President of Wayne County Athletic Association, and Chairman of Wayne County Golf League. Lee served as Head Golf Professional at both Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club (26 years) and Newark Country Club (8 years). The PGA of America awarded him a Lifetime Membership. He loved teaching golf, and was an accomplished golfer himself. He played an integral part in the expansion of Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club from 9 to 18 holes. Lee left an impressive legacy of public service. He served in the US Navy during World War II on the aircraft carrier USS Randolph and received the American Theater Medal, Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, and Asiatic Pacific Medal (3 stars). Some of his contributions to his community included volunteering for Meals on Wheels, St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, AFS, and Lyons Hall of Fame Committee member. The Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year in 1979. While living in the Wayne County Nursing Home he taught, from his wheelchair, an exercise class twice a week for the residents. NEWARK: Gladys Marie Ryckbost, 95, entered into eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, September 21, 2018, at the Newark Manor Nursing Home. Gladys was born to the late Jacob and Minnie (Buechner) Collier on November 20, 1922, in Arcadia (Marion), NY. She spent her early life in the Marion area, graduating from Marion High School in 1941. Gladys loved music. She played the French horn in her high school band, achieving honors ratings in the New York State School Music Association Competition Festival in 1938 and 1939. She also served as president of her high school senior class. Gladys married Albert Ryckbost of East Palmyra in July 1943, and together they raised a family of five children. In addition to Al’s banking career, she and Albert grew cabbage and raised chickens to provide funds for the Christian school education of their children. She worked part-time for Sibley’s Department Store in Newark for many years, where she enjoyed working with the public and her co-workers. Gladys was a long-time member of the East Palmyra Christian Reformed Church and was a supporter of East Palmyra Christian School. She served on various committees in these organizations. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She loved to bake and made wonderful pies, cookies, and special cinnamon rolls that were enjoyed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gladys will be remembered by her twin daughters, Diane (John) Boers of Grand Rapids, MI, and Donna Achterhof of Round Hill, VA; her sons, John (Kathy) Ryckbost of Newark, William (Diane) Ryckbost of Holland, MI, and Thomas (Amy) Ryckbost of Grand Rapids, MI, as well as 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. VERO BEACH, FL: Age 99, born March 27, 1919 passed on peacefully to the next life on Thursday, September 20, 2018 in Vero Beach, Florida. Predeceased by her husband Charles G. Castor in 2013. She is survived by her son, John Castor and daughter, Laura Baker; 4 grandchildren, Amy Ruiz, Laura Engle, Amara Kimberly and Andrew Baker; and 2 great-grandchildren, Alessandra and Joaquin. Doris was a Golden Eaglet Girl Scout and graduate of Mynderse Acadamy in Seneca Falls, where she received the Kiwanis Award for “Leadership, Scholarship and Citizenship”, as well as a NYS Regents Scholarship. At Cornell she was elected to Omicicron Nu Honorary Home Economics Society and President of The Home Economics students. She married Charles G. Castor on December 21, 1942 when he was home on leave from the Army. She was Head of the Home Economics Department of Ogontz Junior College in Abington, PA. After the children were grown she accepted a position as Home Economist and later County Coordinator of the Wayne County Cooperative Extension Service. In 1978 she received a National Distinguished Service Award at Omaha, Nebraska from the National Assoc. of Home Economists. Doris and Charles retired in Palm Bay Florida and later moved to Indian River Estates in Vero Beach. Doris was an active member of the United Methodist Church serving in several offices of the UMC in North Rose, including United Methodist Women, Church School Teacher and Youth Fellowship leader. She enjoyed the skills of cooking, sewing, upholstering, caning chairs and painting. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, (Oct. 13) 2 pm at North Rose United Methodist Church. NEWARK: Ruth Whitbeck Bush died Saturday (September 29, 2018) at the age of 104. She had been a resident of Wayne County Nursing Home since September of 2013. She was born April 27,1914 in Fulton New York the daughter of Clair W.V. Whitbeck and Leah Bertha Rappole Whitbeck, Ruth graduated from Cortland Normal School (SUNY Cortland) with the Class of 1935 and taught elementary school in Valley Stream Long Island. Ruth has been a member of Park Presbyterian Church since 1939. She was a long time member of the Florence E. Wright Chapter (Esther Stevens Brazer Guild) of the Historic Society of Early American Decoration and helped to organize the League of Women Voters in 1938. Ruth is survived by two sons James (Susan) of Macedon, William (Sara) of Palmyra, grandchildren Jeffrey (Nancy Ann) Bush of San Francisco, Scott Bush of Pittsford, Peter (Nicole) Bush of Cleveland Ohio, and Emily Bush of Rochester, New York. She also leaves great grandchildren Oliver, Henry, Isobel, Charlotte, and Caroline. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Bernald in 2001 and their daughter Carolyn (Connie) in 2010 and a sister Dorothy Blair. Dottie is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Roger DeMay; sons, Brian (Suellen) DeMay and Bruce (Tracey) DeMay; grandchildren, Jack, Rayna, Mason, Nathan and Sawyer; sisters, Nancy Lou Cornmesser, Sandra Knight, Kathleen (Clyde) Dora and Geri (Dave) Henning; several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
